During the crucial years when tremendous incentive to expand high tech
in Canada emerged, Dr. Wong had the vision to amass the synergy to
advance high-tech research from one of the top Canadian universities.
Hence in 1980, he founded the PAMI Lab, a graduate research laboratory
at the University of Waterloo involving faculty members from Departments
of Systems Design Engineering and later from Department of Electrical and
Electronic Engineering. Dr. Wong served as its Director from 1980 to 2001.
He is now honored as the Founding Director of PAMI. In May 2004, the group
was transferred to the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
The research objectives of the PAMI Group are:
• advance the state-of-the-art in machine intelligence, computer vision, and robotics
• develop human resources for high-tech research and development, and
• promote technology transfer between the university and industry.
In 1981, PAMI was one of five research groups responsible for the planning
and organization of the Institute of Computer Research at the University. PAMI has been an active member of the Manufacturing Research Centre of Ontario
(MRCO) since 1987. MRCO later changed its name to Materials and Manufacturing
Ontario (MMO). The very substantial support from MMO has enabled PAMI to make
major advances in computer vision, vision coordinated robotics, autonomous mobile
robots and multi-agent task planning. Over the years, PAMI has established strong
relationships with many industry partners. Technology and knowledge transfer have
been realized through research contracts and training of highly qualified personnel.
Members of the group have been involved in
four spin off companies.
Since 1980, PAMI researchers have received over $10,000,000 in research grants and
contracts from government, centers of excellence and industry. The collaboration
between PAMI and industry partners creates opportunities for university-industry technology transfer.
